Saottini Società Agricola, a prestigious
family-run business for over 100 years

How it started

The Saottinis, composed of our grandpa Cesar and his wife Maria (they were born both in 1884), together with his four brothers, were a patriarchal family from a little town named BOTTICINO (BS). They were farmers that at the beginning of the twenty century moved to Lonato del Garda, to the village named San Polo, close to Cascina Monte Mario. There they could keep on working as tenant farmers.

Our granpa and his brothers were drafted into military service during the WWI. In 1917 our grandma was told that there was a law that allowed to be discharged from the army by renting a farmhouse. Even if she had four children (Augusta b.1909, Angelo b. 1911, Mario b. 1913, Enrico b. 1914) she made a choise: a farmhouse in Tugurio Street – Maguzzano – had to be rented.

So in 1917 our granpa Cesare came back home from the WWI and Agnese, the fifth daughter, was born in 1919.

Our grandpa Cesar’s return from the WWI

After all those years, our granpa Cesar, helped by some old employee, two oxen and a horse, started ploghing his soils around the house and started planting small vineyards. So began our farmhouse business.

Each son and each daughter got married: aunt Augusta to Filippo, uncle Angelo to Angela, dad Mario to mom Giovanna (1937), uncle Enrico to Rosa and aunt Agnese to Aldo
Cesare’s sons together with their wifes continued with the business: cultivation of vineyards, forage and cereals, need for cattle breeding. Horses and oxen were useful for the work in the countryside, too.

In 1942 the first tractor was bought: a second hand Fordson. On 21 April 1951 our grandpa Cesare died and in September his three sons decided to buy another tractor, a brand new Landini L.25.

Dad Mario

Years passed by and his three sons continued with the farmhouse; in 1960 two sons changed their activities and only Mario kept on working as a farmer. In 1963 dad Mario and mom Giovanna bought with big sacrifies a new tractor, a Ford Super Major. It had much power (55 hp) and Saottini family has been holding it since then. From the marriage between Mario and Giovanna four children were born: Lorenzo, Silvano and twins Loredana e Cesare.

In the farmstead our life was going on: we worked, we went to school and to the church. The Saottinis were always ready to welcome friends and relatives. From the 50’s our tractors were blessed by the priest during the thanksgiving’s day. In december 1964 Ford Super Major received its firs blessing.

In January 1970, in Lonato, on Sant’Antonio Abate’s holiday was organized a challenge for the most beautiful decoration: Saottinis’ tractor got the first prize.

Dad Mario, keeps on running his farm with persistence.

Up to the present day

After parents’ death in 2002, Silvano and Cesare run the business.
Since 2010 the farm has been growning up due to the presence of Daniele, Cesare’s son, that thanks to grandpa Mario, uncle Silvano and the father, could follow this passion, carried on with hard work and dedication.
We celebrate with much gratitude and love our grandma Maria, that bravely faced her life and difficulties in a very hard period.
